#10 INTERESTING FACTS OF OUR PLANET EARTH

Earth the place where the only planet in our Solar System we know of thrives life and death. But how much to you know about the Earth we have lived on from the beginning, the time our feet felt the ground of Earth. Here we will look at the 10 facts of Earth we may not have known about.

About Earth: Earth is the third planet from the Sun, the densest planet in the Solar System, the largest of the Solar System's four terrestrial planets, and the only astronomical object known to harbour life.

#Facts
1. Earth is not a perfect sphere.
Most of us think that Earth is a sphere in shape. But, it is not thanks to modern astronomy and space travel, scientists came to the understanding that the Earth  is actually shaped like a flattened sphere. This happens solely because of the rotation of the Earth and gravity pointing toward the centre of our planet, which causes a slight bulge towards the equator.

2. It's not exactly 365 days a year on Earth.
It is actually 365.2564 days. Its's this extra .2564 days that create the need for  leap years. That's why we tack on an extra day in February every four years - 2004, 2008, 2012, etc. unless it's divisible  by 100 (1900, 2100, etc) unless it's divisible by 400 (1600, 2000, etc).

3. 70% of the Earth's Surface is covered in water.
Earth is a watery place, it is 70% covered in water, about 96.5 percent of all Earth's water is held in the oceans. The remaining 30% is the solid crust that is located above sea level, hence why it is called the 'Continental Crust'.

4. Iron, Oxygen, Silicon and Magnesium are the elements which make up more than 90 percent of the Earth's mass.

5. Earth has one natural satellite that is The Moon.
The Moon is the fifth largest natural satellite in the Solar System and the largest among planetary satellites relative to the size of the planet that it orbits.

6. It doesn't take 24 hours for Earth to rotate on its axis.
It actually takes 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds for the Earth to rotate one completely on its axis, which astronomers refer to as a Sideral Day.
But remember that the Earth orbits around the Sun. Every day, the Sun moves compared to the background stars by about 1° - about the size of the Moon in the sky. And so, if you add up that little motion from the Sun that we see because the Earth is orbiting around it, as well as the rotation on its axis, you get a total of 24 hours.

7. The Earth planet name is the only planet not named after a God.
The other seven planets in our Solar System are all named after Roman gods and goddesses. The word 'Earth' comes from the old English word "ertha" meaning ground or land.

8. The Earth's rotation is gradually slowing.
This deceleration is happening almost not noticeably, at approximately 17 milliseconds per hundred years. This effect the lengthening of our days, but it is happening very slowly that it will take 140 million years for a day to increased to 25 hours.

9. The Earth's Molten Iron Core creates a powerful magnetic field.
The Earth plays like a great big magnet, with poles at the top and bottom near to the actual geographic poles. This protects the planet from the effects of solar winds.

10. Only 3% water of the Earth is fresh, rest 97% salted of that 3%, over 2% is frozen in ice sheets and glaciers. That means less than 1% fresh water is found in lakes, rivers and underground.
